Industry Initiatives
Visa has adopted new operating policies to reassure consumers
that it is safe to shop online.
From Visa Web Merchant News:
Effective 1 June 2001, all online Visa merchants must post their privacy policy
on their Web sites. Requiring all Visa merchants globally to
prominently post their policy regarding use of non-public personal data will
instill confidence in consumers and complement Global Payment's best practices
recently set by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development
(OECD).
Visit Visa's Web site at: http://www.visa.com/fb/wmn/main.html for complete
information regarding the requirement.
Inventory and assess security controls and ensure that
personal and cardholder data is secure and not subject to compromise.
Visa has an online automated self-assessment questionnaire located at: http://www.visabrc.com/documents/self-assessment.pdf.
You will need Acrobat Reader to view the self-assessment
questionnaire. If you do not have any version of Acrobat Reader,
you can download the the latest 32 bit version available here: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
Also, the Cardholder Information Security Program (CISP) publication identifies
best practices for all Internet and card not present merchants, service
providers, and others that hold sensitive cardholder data.
In response to the self-regulation policy challenge, Visa
policy requires all electronic commerce merchants to post both their consumer
data privacy policy and method of transaction security on their Web site no
later than June 1, 2001. Although most sites post this information,
please utilize these links to assist you in the development of a privacy policy
and statement.
The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development
(OECD) has a how to tool for developing a privacy policy and statement.
This statement generator tool is found at: http://cs3-hq.oecd.org/scripts/pwv3/pwhome.htm.
The OECD developed that OECD Generator as a tool to provide
users with useful input in the development of a privacy policy and
statement. The OECD Generator provides guidance on conducting an
internal review of existing personal data practices and on developing a privacy
policy statement. The Generator makes use of a questionnaire to
learn about your personal data practices. A Help Section provides
explanatory notes and practical guidance. Warning flags appear where
appropriate. Responses are feed into a pre-formatted draft policy
statement. Additional links to private sector organizations with
expertise in developing a privacy policy, governmental agencies,
non-governmental organizations, and private bodies that give information on
applicable regulations can be found.
